Ever since studying abroad in Florence, Italy for 3 months in the fall of 2014- I’ve missed having gelato on almost a daily basis. But, in LA it’s hard to find truly authentic gelato. GROM Gelato was started in Turin, Italy in 2003 with one mission: to make gelato how it was meant to be made, with fresh & high quality ingredients. 13 years later, GROM is international- with locations all over Italy, Dubai, Jakarta, Osaka, Paris, New York, and LA. In LA there are 2 locations: one in Hollywood, and one in Malibu.
The GROM location in Hollywood is bound to be a tourist favorite as it’s situated right at Hollywood & Highland- steps away from the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. For locals, it’s worth the trip to the busy Hollywood strip as you won’t find gelato like this anywhere else in the city- it’s that good.
I’ve tried several flavors at GROM, but I traditionally stick with fruit flavors, or sorbetto, as it’s a safer indulgence! My favorites are the limone (lemon) and fragola (strawberry). I’ve also tried the pera (pear) flavor & it has so much fresh pear in it you may as well be eating the real thing! There are plenty of flavors to suit any palate- from sweet, chocolatey, creamy, to fruity. They even have special flavors that rotate seasonally. They also serve hot chocolate, or cioccolata calda, with fresh whipped cream which I’m dying to try!
One way to know what gelato is legit- you’ll see these silver containers instead of mile-high stacked gelato that’s either fake to attract tourists & has terrible quality. GROM’s gelato is amazing- and it’s well worth the price (average ~$6 for a 2-flavor cone). For example, some gelato may be articially dyed and use artificial ingredients, however, GROM is 100% natural, dye-free, and even gluten free! (sans the cone).
If you’re LA based or in any area where GROM is located (even if you’re planning a trip to Italy in the near future)- definitely check GROM out and tell them I sent you!
