You’ve seen tons of subscription boxes in the past, I’m sure…but have you seen a nail polish + nail art dedicated box? I hadn’t seen one that piqued my interest (since Julep) until I was introduced to Blackbox by Cult Cosmetics. This box features 3 seasonal nail polishes and a nail art tool for $19.99. I received a complimentary box and thought I’d share what I received & my overall thoughts!
The 3 polishes that came in the August box were China Glaze Surfin’ For Boys, Essie First Timer, and Essie Full Steam Ahead. The nail art tool I received was nail striping tape from MASH.
China Glaze Surfin’ For Boys is a neon pinky-coral with some pink/silver shimmer. This one is very matte, since it’s so bright, and has a great formula.
Essie First Timer is a gorgeous green that isn’t quite mint and isn’t quite aqua…it’s somewhere in between! I found this one to have a bit of a thick & streaky formula, but 2 coats will be perfect for this shade. This polish is from their summer collection from this year!
Essie Full Steam Ahead is a beautiful lilac shade with a subtle silver sparkle. This one has a sheer first coat, but a second coat will make it opaque. It’s a bit darker than it shows in the bottle, though, and the shimmer is a nice touch. This polish was a part of Essie’s 2013 “Naughty Nauticals” collection.
The MASH nail art striping tape is perfect for creating clean lines and other fun nail art designs. The pack comes with 10 colors, so you have a lot of options! At first, striping tape may seem hard, but if you have some cuticle scissors for trimming the tape after applying, you’ll get the hang of it in no time!

I decided to experiment with the colors and striping tape for fun…but if you can’t come up with your own ideas, there are tutorials on the back of the card to spark some creativity!
Using Full Steam Ahead, I created a negative space manicure using gold nail art tape. This is a very simple look, but it looks very hard!
Using First Timer, I created a simple triangle on the tip of my nail, using the nail art tape as a guideline. It’s a bit hard to stay in the lines, but it creates a nice clean and crisp line.
Lastly, using Surfin’ For Boys, I did a fishnet design by using the nail art tape to create diagonal lines criss-crossing each other on my nail. This one was probably the hardest, because there are so many pieces of tape to lay out!
Overall I really love Blackbox. I think it’s a fabulous service that is well worth the price, from what I’ve seen in this box. You can even get your first box for 50% off! What a steal! I can’t wait to see the polishes they include in boxes to come!
What do you think, would you sign up for a nail polish subscription?
