I thought it would be fun to mix things up a little bit and start doing more lifestyle posts on my blog & YouTube channel, so I decided to kick it off with this fun DIY! I am always on the hunt for cool room decor, but I typically find a lot of the pieces, especially art, to be so overpriced! Instead of shelling out $50 or more for a nice small art piece, I decided to create my own! This chevron glitter canvas is super simple and totally customizable to whatever tastes you have! I opted for orange (my favorite color) and gold glitter to create my canvas, but there are so many options as far as color go! Here is what you’ll need to follow along with my video:
- Canvas (mine is 16 x 20 in.)- I got a 2 pack for only $5.99!
- Acrylic Paint– choose whatever colors you would like! I opted for orange.
- Glitter– I picked a chunky gold glitter. Experiment with other shades and textures!
- Chevron Tape– Frog Tape makes Chevron Shape Tape that makes this project a blast- no ruler necessary to create your chevron pattern! I really liked this tape- it worked flawlessly!
- Spray Adhesive– you can use Mod Podge instead, but the spray adhesive was very easy. Find it in craft & hardware stores.
- Spray Gloss– this is a must have if you decide to use glitter- it prevents the glitter from shedding all over the place! You can also pick this up at craft & hardware stores.
- Sponge brushes, scissors, a plastic card, and paper to protect the area are all must haves too!
Steps:
- Cut tape long enough to wrap around the sides of the canvas. For my 16 x 20in canvas, my pieces were 18-19 inches long. Make sure you don’t cut too many strips of tape! I used 8 strips on my canvas.
- Put tape on canvas. It may appear hard to measure how far to space apart the pieces of tape, but what I did requires no ruler. Line up your first piece of tape to the top of the canvas, and then use an extra piece of chevron tape to space out the distance you need for the next piece. Tape the piece down, and then repeat the process.
- Make sure tape has no bubbles by using a plastic card (like a credit card) to smooth out any imperfections.
- Now you’re ready to get to painting! It doesn’t matter if you do paint or glitter first, really, but I did glitter. Apply your spray adhesive by spraying a healthy coating on & spreading evenly on the canvas (don’t forget the sides), and immediately add glitter, then tap off excess. Repeat until finished (I did every other stripe).
- Use acrylic paint and a sponge brush to paint on your last few stripes, alternating glitter & paint for each stripe. I used 3 coats of paint, but use however many you need until it’s opaque.
- Remove all of the tape while paint is still wet. This will help give you the sharpest lines. I had an issue with loose glitter getting into my paint, but you can easily scratch it off after a few hours once the paint is dry! Let your paint dry until continuing (it doesn’t take long).
- Spray on gloss spray to seal glitter & prevent shedding. I used 2 heavy coats, but depending on the size of your glitter, you may need more or less. Let dry before bringing it inside & hanging it up.
It’s really as simple as that! I am so happy with my canvas- I think I want to make another one! I definitely would love to see you guys recreate this project at home and send me photos of what you came up with! It is a fun way to spruce your room up for cheap, and it makes for a simple day project. I hope you enjoyed & I look forward to posting more lifestyle posts including more home decor, DIYs, and food!
